The Stories We Tell!!
Do you remember as kids we all enjoyed listening to stories and most of us also created stories of our own. Stories are a fantastic creation of our mind!! We as humans Love stories. Sometimes these stories are real to a certain extent, and sometimes they are just another creation of our mind. We invest most of our time to create these stories that we tell ourselves and people around us. Some of these stories are wonderful expression of our mind that might help us upgrade. But there are also these stories that we keep telling ourselves that are not true and not at all helpful.
One of such story that our mind tends to create is where we play a role of a victim. We all can live in our sob stories for the rest of our lives and nothing will change. Same struggles, same experiences, same feelings just different people is what I feel. When I tell myself how helpless I’m it also gives me permission to be in the mess I’m in right now. I don’t have to put in any effort to bring in change in my life, as I’m ‘The Victim’. And if I’m the victim there also has to be a culprit who is to be blamed for the condition I’m in. For e.g if I say people disrespect me and I feel how bad people are and I have to live in this misery and disrespect because of them; but we forget that I have also allowed others to disrespect me. Or there could be another example I do so much for everyone around and I don’t get anything in return!! Or maybe no one loves me and everyone eventually leaves me. And I can give you many more of such example's. It’s not that when the world around me changes then my life will be good. If it’s my life the accountability to fix it, improve it and change it is completely mine. If it is set in my mind that world around me treats me a certain way and so I suffer. Or the world around me holds more responsibility on how and what I do and feel, which also means that I’m helpless and my life will not change till the world around me change's. All of these victim stories eventually become a part of our belief system; then to keep my believe intact and the story alive I need to keep feeding them so that it doesn’t fade way.
Eventually all these stories we keep telling ourselves become our comfort zone. Yes, you heard me right!! it becomes my comfort zone even if we don’t like the experiences we create in our lives due to these stories. By living in the comfort of my stories I don’t really have to do anything at all. I can conveniently put the blame on someone or something else and continue with my life. This is the sole reason television series that run on victim scripts run for years together because the victim in us relates to the victim on screen. That brings me to the next question are we doing what really needs to be done to bring the change we wish to see in our life??Are we taking complete responsibility of our life?? Which means most of what we are experiencing is also created by us. Which also means the responsibility of changing it also lies in our hands.
It’s easy to put the blame on someone or something else but it’s difficult to take accountability of how my actions shape my life. Can we all look into to the stories we tell ourselves about the world around us as well as how our life is and how we are!! Take a pause to reflect if you are really taking complete accountability of your life, because you never know if it’s the truth or just another fable created by your mind.
